I guess it wasn't that clear to me that he meant players when he said "our hockey guys." I assumed it meant donors that are interested in supporting the hockey team, not explicitly (or exclusively)...

I believe the correct term here is "shame" not "humiliation". Shame can be a powerful motivator.
